English Español Westfalen, EGV AG tap biogas for delivery partnership

With the food supplier converting its fleet to CNG propulsion, service stations of the German company will support this transition.

The Westfalen Group and food wholesaler EGV AG have announced a long-term cooperation for climate-friendly delivery logistics.

In a first joint step, bulk consumers and catering customers in North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony are to be supplied with gas-powered vehicles that use Bio-CNG from Westfalen.

"In addition to low levels of particulate matter and nitrogen oxide, the main advantage for the environment is that almost the same amount of CO2 is absorbed during the production of bio-CNG as is emitted by the vehicle during subsequent combustion," explains Sandra Schütte, Head of Mobility at Westfalen.

The alternative fuel is obtained from waste and residual materials and can reduce CO2 emissions in regional and distribution transport by up to 100% compared to diesel. The food supplier has been using CNG for a large proportion of its vehicle fleet since 2018 - and plans to expand this proportion in the future, including at other company locations.

Westfalen opened its first bio-CNG filling station for commercial vehicles in Coesfeld last year. At the company’s station in Herford, the range of alternative fuels is set to include bio-CNG in the fall.
